The Basics: Length & Types of Writing
We accept most forms and genres of writing: poetry, fiction, flash fiction, plays, creative nonfiction, graphic novels, comics and comic scripts, unsent letters, experimental, sci-fi, literary mainstream, whatever. The type of writing doesn’t matter, but the quality of writing does.
There are mild length restrictions to keep in mind, however. Your writing can be as short as you’d like, but submitted pieces should be no longer than 8,000 words. Those with longer pieces should query first.
Essays, Articles and Columns
Beyond creative writing, we also accept writing with a more journalistic sensibility. You may send either your entire article or a query with links to at least three relevant examples of your work.
Rights, Multiple & Simultaneous Submissions, etc.
Xenith asks for First Electronic Rights, with rights reverting back to you one month after the date of initial publication. We do, however, reserve the right to archive your work on the site. Should your work be reprinted elsewhere, a mention that it first appeared in Xenith would be quite decent of you.
We accept both multiple and simultaneous submissions. Please limit your submissions of poetry to five poems at a time and submissions of all else to no more than two. With simultaneous submissions, we simply ask for the common courtesy of promptly notifying us when your work has been accepted elsewhere. We promise not to hold hard feelings, you gangster, you.
Xenith accepts only previously unpublished work, though if your writing has appeared on your personal site or has been workshopped online somewhere, unlike a lot of other places, we won’t get terribly upset about it.
Pieces are published upon acceptance, meaning that the site is updated as regularly as pieces elbow their way into the front lines. You don’t have to wait a month or two after acceptance to see your piece on the site. Columns are also updated on a regular basis and appear as often as they are written.
Contact Info and Response Times
While we generally try to keep our response times down to one to two months, please do not query us until four months have passed.
Please send all submissions to: patrick.nathan@gmail.com. Submissions pasted into the body of an e-mail are strongly preferred. Feel free to send along a brief biography, if you’d like. We may ask for photos upon acceptance, but please do not include them with your submission.
