Eve Madragan
A girl of many layers. Grew up as the fourth of nine children. Somewhat of a tomboy who won the respect of the local boys at age seven by one day beating up one who was mercilessly teasing her. Ever since, has preferred to hang out with male friends than with the local girls. In fact, she doesn't really have any close female friends. Despises their preoccupation with appearances, their flirty, helpless attitudes, and their general phoniness. Has a tough, resilient, don't-mess-with-me outward demeanor, but inwardly is a very passionate and beautiful person (although she'd never admit it). Is fiercely loyal to friends and would do anything for them. Although she has many good male friends, none have ever found her attractive or have thought of her in a romantic way and have even laughed off the very idea. Even though this does bother her, she'd never admit it. Unfortunately keeps her emotions bottled inside even though she is a very loving and caring person (most easily seen in her tendency to nurse wounded animals back to health when she was younger). Loves the water, the night sky. Has a vivid imagination and is very intelligent.
Father Bryce
The minister of the local parish who arrived unexpectedly at around the same time as the new magistrate. Founded only church in Lavenhill with full backing of magistrate. Lives in the clerical apartment behind the chapel. Provides guidance both practical and spiritual to villagers on regular basis; often visits people in their homes.
Isaac Aerian
An easygoing, charming, and inwardly caring guy. Gets along with people of all ages easily-friends are often quite loyal. Often wears his heart on his sleeve when is comes to the opposite sex, and is always perpetually on the lookout for the one great love of his life. Believes in soul mates and that never finding or overlooking her would be "the one great crime" in life. Close friends with Jonathan, but Eve could most likely be considered his best friend, as they have grown up together. Currently has a misplaced infatuation with Chantelle and spends his days trying to catch her eye.
Jacob Aerian
Father of Isaac. Large, warm, big-hearted man. Works as a carpenter. Loves life and a good, hearty laugh.
Jonathan
Close friend to Isaac. Friend of Eve's as well-very fond of her in a friendly way and can often be found joking around or teasing her. Dry, wisecracking sense of humor. On serious side, is probably Isaac's closest male confidante, dispensing all kinds of advice about the lovely ladies of Lavenhill, particularly about Chantelle, Isaac's latest object of infatuation. Is an amicable and easy-to-like guy.
Joshua
Mutual friend of both Isaac and Eve. Partner-in-crime and best friend of Ryan. Silly, goofball sense of humor. Often known to pull outrageous pranks. Pal of Isaac's, but is very fond of Eve as well (in a platonic sense). Can often be found with both her and Ryan wandering around town enjoying life and causing mischief.
Lena Madragan
Mother of Eve. Strong-willed woman who works on the family farm and as a homemaker taking care of her husband and nine children, two of which are married and one that died in childhood. Great mother and wife who tends to work herself too hard.
Magistrate DuRosse
Father of Chantelle. Arrived unannounced in Lavenhill one day, claiming he was an envoy from the throne in Tyne whose main objective was simply to unify the objectives and governing of all the far-out, rural villages to reflect that of the main part of the country. However, the unnecessary strictness and strong-armed bullying tactics used by the magistrate and his mysterious if not suspicious activities has caused many to doubt his claim. He is widely disliked and distrusted in Lavenhill, but the villagers are powerless to stop him or drive him out.
Norra Aerian
Isaac's mother, married to Jacob Aerian. She works as the town healer/midwife out of a small clinic/infirmary next to the Aerian's home. Makes, sells, and administers homemade herbal medicines, salves, ointments, and tonics to villagers. Hard worker who is trusted by all the citizens of Lavenhill. Makes frequent house-calls and visits to patients.
Old Man
Appears in the Prologue as the old man who hears the voices and sees the candle lit by a shadowy figure. Lives in an abandoned fortress in the Areithan mountains overlooking the Valley of the Seer on Areithos' far western border. Little is known about him at this point in the story except that he apparently holds an important position that few know about anymore and that his true age may be somewhat shocking.
Ryan
Mutual friend of Isaac and Eve. Partner-in-crime and best friend of Joshua. Uncanny knack for doing impressions of people, including the magistrate. Has a wild and hilarious sense of humor. Can often be found with Eve and Joshua wandering around town enjoying life and causing mischief.
Saul Madragan
Eve's father. Raises sheep on the family farm. Sometimes gone for a days on end while herding the sheep and searching out new pastures. He's a tough work ethic with a determined, no-nonsense spirit. The Madragans live on a large, rural farm a bit separated from Lavenhill village limits. He's assisted on the farm by his many children. Even the married ones have settled on the property or nearby to help with the family farm. The farm has been passed down through generations of Madragan and Saul plans to pass it down to his own children in the future.
