To No One
by Melissa S. Creech

I’ve given everything I have, but you say it’s not enough.  I give you all of me, I’ve sold my soul to keep you here.
Nothing seems to kill you, no matter how hard I try.  What I would give to see you cry!
Each time I try to climb higher, you’re always there to knock me down.  It was never meant to be, I wish I wasn’t me.
I’d walk a mile in your shoes, if you’d walk an inch in mine.  Then I’d burn your shoes just to watch you do without.
You make me feel like nothing.  But I pave the way for you.  I pave this gravel road for the ones who make me feel like no one.
You could not exist without me.  You would not be real without me. There’s nothing left for you without me. So now I think I’ll leave.
